They monitor problematic places in the city and also help on pedestrian crossings or schools. Eight members of civil patrols take care of the order in the neighboring town.
Since the beginning of January, eight members of civil patrols have been supervising order and safety in the streets of Jelšava in the Revúca district. They got the job for at least 36 months thanks to the Local Civil Order Services (MOPS) program.
"It's a benefit. We do not have to spend a lot of money on the operation of the municipal police, although it is certainly not comparable with the powers. However, they are people from the Roma community, so they are in order with their people," said Mayor Milan Kolesár, according to which MOPS members monitor problematic places in the city and help on pedestrian crossings or at school.
As he added, civic patrols who wear reflective vests at work also perform a certain preventive function towards drivers. "Many of them told me that when they saw them from a distance, they were scared and stopped immediately because they thought the police were stopping in the city again," Kolesar explained.
In his words, the mayor was also surprised by the very interest of people in MOPS. "We had up to 40 people. Many of them could present themselves at a high level and knew what to expect in this work. It was a difficult choice," Kolesár said, adding that some of the unsuccessful bidders are planning new projects that they plan to launch in spring in cooperation with the Labor Office.
