While long-term mortality statistics on the roads are increasingly positive, as data are lower year on year, if we look at the results more closely, in one case mortality has increased last year. More pedestrians with safety vest died in the cities.

In 2016, 545 people died on Czech roads, 177 of them in the dark. Last year, 32.5% of the total killed in the night was killed. "In the case of the dead-to-death ratio for the total number of deaths in a given category, they clearly led 59.5 percent of the pedestrians, which was more than 55 percent in 2015. Passengers in passenger cars (29.2%), cyclists (23.1%), truck drivers (18.2%) and motorcyclists (13.3%), "says Roman from the Road Safety Team.

In the end, most pedestrians die in the dark. In 2016 there were 66 fatal cases. Another 11 fatal cases from their ranks registered statistics in casualties that occurred during the day but in reduced visibility. "Last year, 69.4 percent of pedestrians lost their lives in an accident that occurred in the dark and in general under reduced visibility - in rain, fog, snowfall, dawn or dusk," remarks Roman. In the village, 38 pedestrians died in the night accidents last year, by 4 more than in 2015. The accident rate of pedestrian deaths occurred outside the municipality.

Supporters of the wearing of security elements therefore have an argument. Last February, the obligation to wear reflective vest outside the village came into force, and it is not necessary in cities. However, it is a question of whether the improvements in safety would help the elements, or rather the greater caution of both drivers and pedestrians.
