The Traffic Police's Winter Action took place in November in three main stages - With a Safe Road Vehicle in Winter, Pedestrians and Drivers for Tolerance on the Road and Safe Driving in Winter.

Even before its launch, the traffic police published basic recommendations to road users. At the same time as the Christmas and New Year holidays are approaching, the road, as usual, will make the road situation more complicated. Not only from the winter road conditions but also from the increased traffic.

The main causes of severe crashes in these traffic conditions include traffic speed, alcohol, improper overtaking, entry into the lane, non-compliance, lack of seat belts, disability and last but not least, fatigue and distraction.

Here are the specific tips from the Traffic Police, which is respected by drivers and passengers in the car, their holidays will not be obscured:

Winter is not a good season for cycling or other two-wheeled vehicles, especially on slippery and icy road surfaces. If we do decide to go out with a bike or moped, then we have to wear a reflective vest with reflective tape. The vehicle must be fitted with service brakes, a bell, a device for emitting white or yellow light at the front and a red reflector at the rear, as well as white or yellow reflectors (or elements) on the sides of the wheels.

Animal-drawn road vehicles must also be visible and distinguishable to other road users. Each animal-drawn road vehicle must have two white or yellow retro-reflectors at the front, two red retro-reflectors at the rear and, at night, with reduced visibility, a rear-left illuminating body emitting white or yellow distinguishable light. The retro-reflectors must be symmetrically located on both sides of the vehicle.

We do not have to save money for the car's full service in winter. If the headlights are not adjusted properly, this can have serious consequences. We need to equip the car with seasonally appropriate tires. Shock absorbers are also extremely important. It is a good idea to have the battery and brake fluid checked for service.

In the winter, the dark part of the day can be very dangerous. It gets dark earlier, which in combination with road conditions is a prerequisite for accidents. When passing an oncoming car, it switches from high beam to low beam and it is advisable to reduce the speed to give us time to react if a surprising obstacle arises.

Traffic police are urging drivers to walk slowly and cautiously past city bus stops. These are one of the areas with a concentration of pedestrian accidents. Bus stops, trolleybuses and trams are most likely to suddenly appear in our car by a fast-paced or running pedestrian who did not look around before crossing. Getting off mass transit vehicles very often cross without looking around. Often, such mistakes are made by older pedestrians and children.

In the rain, we must be prepared for flooded roads and aquaplaning. Once in a deep puddle, the tires lose contact with the road and the car slides. The water layer turns into a slide and the car cannot stop, accelerate or turn. As a result, the car can stand, spin, or go out of the way.

"We must be alert for slippery areas, even on dry roads. These are formed as early as the end of autumn, when in the early morning very often the sails are covered with frost or frost. In the areas around the water basins, you may suddenly fall into a fog. The thick fog and the icing of the trees in cold weather is already a warning that a thin layer of ice may have formed on the sail. The sections of the bridges are icy as early as possible along the entire length of the road and due to the specific air currents."

The northern slopes are also a dangerous obstacle. We have to slow down there, regardless of the restriction indicated by a sign. It is where the icing on the floor is most often formed, as the ice is preserved much longer than the sun-warmed areas during the day.

Before heading out on the road it is good to get acquainted with the weather forecast and the nature of the route that we are about to cross. We need to be patient and prepare for complications. In winter, it goes a long way with a full tank, suitable tires, chains in the trunk and a charged battery on the mobile phone.

Always travel at an average speed in and out of settlements, lower by about 10-15 km / h than usual. This will give you time to react, in the event of a crash in braking or maneuver;

Remember the golden safety rules: "On the road - always farther from the others!" and "Visibility is life!"

When driving, do not get carried away by the example of risky drivers, who are ahead of you and are traveling at excess speed. Follow your security concerns and your management style;

Travel earlier than usual so that you do not rush or worry about being late;

Do not set an exact time of arrival and do not schedule appointments, as possible delay will cause you distress and will lead to risky driving and speeding;

If a convoy of cars is formed, accept the unavoidable delay of movement so you do not lose focus and get nervous;

Do not give in if your satellites prompt you to increase speed;

When driving in the dark, be sure to reduce the speed when switching the lights from long to short. If you have backlighting, be sure to reduce the speed further;

In a populated area, when passing by parked cars, in a busy area with heavy traffic of pedestrians and children, past parks and gardens, past public transport stop, when motorcyclists, mopeds, cyclists and others are noticed. reduce speeds to very low limits to be able to react and prevent accidental accidents;

Be sure to reduce the speed if you notice a child near the lane. It may suddenly leak to the canvas;

Always consider the speed with traffic intensity; tire condition; sail condition, visibility; performing improper maneuvers by other road users;

Monitor the road surface continuously and closely. If the road becomes slippery or follows a section with dangerous bumps, reduce speed slowly;

When driving children, significantly reduce speed and increase distance and focus;

Always wear seat belts and have children travel in child seats and seats;

Only be ahead of schedule with full certainty that you can complete the maneuver without the risk of collision with an oncoming vehicle;

When overtaking do not turn sharply and near the overtaken car - you can easily lose control of the car;

Do not travel if you are overworked and if you are asleep;

When you fell asleep behind the wheel, do not force yourself to continue driving. Stop immediately in a comfortable, safe place by the side of the road and take a nap for at least 15-20 minutes;

Even small doses of alcohol are not safe at all. Although considered harmless, blood alcohol levels below 0.5 per thousand have been shown to cause euphoria, lead to an unrealistic assessment of the situation and delay the driver's reactions;

Give up the misleading calculation of alcohol concentration when drinking one or two glasses.
