Officials decided to "reduce the intensity" of the search for a Thai citizen and a Polish citizen who disappeared while kayaking on December 7th. As the major of tourist police Ekkay Chiri stated, since December 20, a targeted search for kayakers has not been conducted. At the same time, the officer refused to call it the termination of the search operation.
"This is not a stop to the search. This is only a decrease in search intensity," said the major.
According to the officer, all employees involved in the operation returned to their usual duties, but while going out to sea to solve other problems they will continue to look for traces of kayakers.
26-year-old Mateusz Yushkevich and 23-year-old Verakan Sirirakon, along with friends, rented kayaks on the Yanui beach and went to inspect the water area, but on the way back they lagged behind the rest of the group, called them on the phone and informed that they could not return to the beach on their own. Friends of the disappeared reached the shore after sunset and raised the alarm, but they could not find Mateusz and Verakan in the dark. They no longer got in touch.
The active phase of the search continued for the first five days when helicopters of the Navy and tourist police made 18 sorties, and groups on boats completed 34 trips to the sea. Since December 12, helicopters have been recalled, as well as part of the boats participating in the operation, the attention of the remaining was switched to coastal waters and the coast. At the same time, divers were connected to the search for the missing. Also around this moment, the relatives of the missing Thai and Pole began their search operation, which they continue to this day.
"Our searches will be resumed if the families of the missing ones manage to find out something or some kind of tip-up appears, for example, a life jacket with reflective tape, a kayak or something else. When some key to the location of the missing appears, we will get connected to work," said Major Siri.
