Upper Austria. Winter often makes cycling uncomfortable and risky when it's cold, with limited visibility and difficult road conditions. The ARBÖ Upper Austria gives cyclists tips on how to master the wintry conditions.

In winter, slippery roads and poor visibility pose challenges for cyclists. Nevertheless, both e-bikes and conventional bicycles are very popular in the cold season. The bicycles are not only used in leisure time, but also for commuting to work or school.

Adjusted speed

According to ARBÖ Upper Austria, it should be noted that wetness, slush, snow, ice, and gravel reduce the braking ability. Cyclists should therefore pay attention to the road surface and adjust their speed accordingly. By adjusting the speed, you can avoid abrupt braking or steering maneuvers.

According to ARBÖ, it is also important to pay close attention when cycling and to be visible. In order not to be overlooked, one should wear light and reflective clothing. Reflective tapes and safety vests can also be used. When it comes to clothing, it is also recommended that you dress warmly and wear gloves that are suitable for driving. Freezing fingers reduce the sensitivity.

Switch on the lights and reduce tire pressure

Further tips from the ARBÖ are lowering the saddle so that you can catch the bike quickly in an emergency and bring it back into balance, and lower tire pressure. This increases the contact area of the tire and thus ensures more stability. The minimum pressure is indicated on the tire wheel. When it comes to e-bikes, keep in mind that the cold reduces the battery capacity. The ARBÖ recommends storing and charging the battery at room temperature at temperatures below zero. It should only be installed back into the e-bike shortly before the ride.

The bicycle ordinance prescribes the specific minimum equipment for every bicycle. The bike should be checked for these criteria, for example, the presence of a bell. A functioning light is also essential. This should be set so that the center of the light cone hits the road about ten meters in front of the wheel.

Overall, the respective situation should always be assessed, says Thomas Harruk, regional manager of ARBÖ Upper Austria. "If you have to adjust the seat height or tire pressure due to slush or even ice on the road, for example, because you are afraid of a fall, you should ask yourself whether you shouldn't leave your bike for a change and choose another means of transport instead," he concludes.
