The city is investing two million Euros in the new firefighter's uniform. The outfit is lighter and better equipped.

It is sand-colored, around 500 grams, and thus noticeably lighter than its predecessor and it is even better equipped: The fire department Duisburg has presented their new safety clothing. The approximately 1000 forces of the professional fire brigade and the volunteer fire department are to be dressed in the coming months gradually with it. In the end, the city will have paid around two million Euros for the complete exchange. But this is a worthwhile investment, said fire brigade chief Oliver Titman: "This latest generation of protective clothing takes us far ahead."

Art mist swells out of the access area to the fire station in Alt-Holmberg. This fashion show ambience is desired. Because out of the smoke five firefighters enter the open air. Four of them introduce their new safety gear to visitors, including OB Siren Link. Michael, Head of Technical Services and Logistics at the Fire Brigade, introduces the differences between precursor and successor model point by point.

The color change from dark blue to sand-ocher first becomes apparent. "The lighter reflective tape ensures better visibility of colleagues in action," explains Michael. In addition, the jacket has a sewn-on rescue handle, on which a college can be pulled away from a dangerous spot in case of injury", describes the equipment expert.

The new reflective jacket is significantly shorter than the original outfit that has been used over the past 20 years. "It is much more comfortable to wear," Makita describes her impressions. She has been with the volunteer fire department for two years, is currently undergoing training as a professional firefighter and belongs to those who show visitors the new clothing.

Like all of her colleagues, Makita also had to go to a fitting in order to adopt the new wardrobe to the respective body measurements. With two of these uniforms, every firefighter force in Duisburg should be equipped at the end. Per copy about 900 Euros are due, says Michael. "So the new one is not more expensive than the old equipment." After the Europe-wide invitation to tender, the offers were examined in more detail by five manufacturers. "We tested everything thoroughly," emphasizes fire brigade chief Titman. Ultimately, the Swiss company was awarded the contract.

Thanks to a sewn-in chip, clothes of Christophe and Sebastian (both 33) are now personalized. The two twins from Oberhausen have been working for ten or nine years with the local fire department. Her first impression of wearing is also positive.
