Becoming a fashion thing
"I think we all remember fabric bags from the Soviet era. Back then, a fabric shopping bag was a necessity because plastics were not available on a massive scale as they are now. Later also Latvia boomed in the plastic bag boom, but lately, as the public is educated, cloth bags are gradually returning. Today, everyone wants something unique and original, so a fabric bag becomes a fashion item. Also, two uniforms usually fail to be sewn - there are no two identical ones in my collection," says D.Udre with a smile.
Daily, she teaches sewing skills to students with various disabilities in the Smiltene Technical School's Elswick area. D. Udre has good cooperation with sewing shops, factories, who are happy to give scraps of various fabrics to the school. They make not only fabric bags, but even costumes, as skilled tailors can make the right cuts from small pieces of fabric. This is also a way of saving resources. With the cloth bags D.Udre together with the students this year will also participate in the green markets.
Even very large capacity
D. Udre emphasizes that bags can be seen from a variety of fabrics, such as workwear because they are firm and durable, linen, furniture, and coat fabrics, corduroy and others. The thicker the fabric, the stronger the bag, the thinner the more compact it can be rolled.
Size and capacity, shape, handle lengths can also vary - you have to let the fantasy go. "The bag can be sewn in different capacities - even as big as, for example, the largest shopping bag from Maxima or Rimi. Properly cut and tightened at the top of the bag can create a high capacity bag. It can also be sewn with a separate and wider base, which will also allow for greater capacity. You can fold the bottom of the bag - this will also make the bag better suited for shopping," recommends D.Udre.
Also with reflectors
So that children can get used to using cloth bags from a very young age, they can also be sewn beautiful, for example, with pictures of animals. "Not only can a fabric bag be practical, but it can also be a safety factor for your owner when it incorporates reflective material. It is also possible to sew a lining from a piece of reflective fabric or from a piece of clothing that is no longer suitable for wear, which can also give the material a second life. Also, by sewing the bag yourself, everyone can match it to the costume or accessories, and design it to their liking," suggests D.Udre.
The seamstress also has a pouch with a special eyelet, closure, and button - the pouch can be folded down to prevent it from rolling open. Made from linen, this bag is also decorated with lace and will be a great holiday gift.
Dare and sew!
"People today buy expensive computer bags for expensive money, but they can also sew them themselves. I've made several of them - with a zipper and pockets. First to my daughter, then to her colleagues, because we were recognized as very good," says the seamstress.
D. Udre emphasizes that ideas come from everyday meetings with peers and a little from the Internet. "One bag takes about two hours, a willingness to work and a fantasy. It will be worth it to create a beautiful, original gift and surprise your loved ones. For a creative approach - the key is to dare to try and sew!" Recommends D.Ūdre.
